Sphynx Care

BATHING
Most people think they don't have to groom a Sphynx. This is  not true. Since they have no fur to absorb body oils they need frequent bathing. Your breeder will have already begun bathing and clipping the nails. Your kitty should be used to it when you bring it home.
The first thing you need to do before you even give the bath is to make certain that you have all the equipment that you need. You don't want to get halfway through the bath just to discover that you forgot something that was needed. I usually get a washcloth, a cup, some cat shampoo, and a warm towel. Make sure to run the water before you get the cat.  Make sure the water is warm.  Then gently place the dirty kitty in the water. Wash face and eyes gently before using any soap. Then get him/her wet and lather on some shampoo.  Make sure to check around and between toes as stuff accumulates there. Then rinse off the soap and dry your now clean kitty off. This process really doesn't take long and after a little practice, you can get the whole routine done in about 10-15 minutes. I wrap the cat up in a warm towel from the dryer to get it ready for the nails and ears.

NAILS
If you wrapped your kitten in a towel warm from the dryer this process is much easier as it will be very content. By squeezing her toe, the claw will pop out so you can trim it. Be careful that you don't clip the sensitive pink quick (don't clip within about 2 mm. of the quick) and that you clip only the very tip of the nail. You will need to clip your cat's nails about every week . Your kitten also needs a scratching post. This will keep it from scratching your furniture and carpet. Buy a sisal post as the carpeted ones train it to be OK to scratch carpet.

EARS
Cleaning your Sphynx's ears must be done. They have very waxy ears and  can get ear infections.  I squeeze some ear cleaner from my vet in each ear. Then I use a cotton pad to wipe it out. I clean only the areas I can see with a Q-Tip. Be very careful with the Q-Tip. The cat will shake like crazy afterwards so make sure you don't do it anywhere where the ear cleaner will stain.(White bedspread, etc)

VET AND VACCINATIONS
My kittens go home with a complete clean bill of health, spayed or neutered if applicable and their first shots. For your health guarantee please take your baby to vet within 72 hours of getting home.
VACCINATIONS
All Adults - Yearly - Subcutaneous (under skin) 3 way modified live if non-show cat's. 4 way modified live (with Chlamydia) if taking your baby to the shows. Do not give the 4-way modified live vaccine before 9 weeks of age.

Kittens - At 6 weeks of age give the 3 way modified live subcutaneously, then again at 9 and one last shot at 12 weeks. At the 12-week vaccination give the 4 way modified live vaccine if you are thinking of showing. Please consult with your veterinarian regarding his/her opinion on this. Make sure you find a vet who is familiar with Sphynx cats. If the vet says your cat has ear mites make them look under the microscope. The oily accumulation in their ears looks the same. And this will be your first clue that they have never treated a Sphynx and I suggest moving on. Call around, ask questions first. I have switched to a cat only facility. I find them much more sensitive and knowledgeable to my cats needs.

DIET- I feed a totally raw diet to all my cats. I will give you a menu on what I feed to take home. This seems daunting, but really quite easy once you get used to it. I find my cats are happier and healthier on this diet. If you buy a kitten from me I will make your raw food for you at a very reasonable price.

PLAY AND CUDDLING
Sphynx love to be held and cuddled. If you are looking for a low maintenance cat, move on. This little baby wants to be a part of your family. Mine all cuddle up in bed with me. They arrive before I do. They also want to keep warm. So, make sure they have a nice warm place to sleep. If not with you then in a bed with a blanket. In colder climates you may want to get a heated cat bed. They love to look out my window. I have a cat condo in front of the living room window. It is warm and sunny and I have bird feeders hanging outside. I also play the kitty babysitting CD's when I am not home. My dogs and cats never seem to get tired of the squeaking on them. Make sure they have somewhere that is OK to scratch. Anytime they start to scratch where you don't want say no loudly and put them where it is OK. I don't allow cats on counters or tables. I do the same thing and also will squirt them with a squirt gun. They learn really quickly.

DANGERS TO YOUR CAT
Let's just say that I don't know of a plant that is not toxic to a cat. Except the special grass you can grow for them from the pet store. I grow mine in a low container with sterilized soil and lots of decorative rocks so they don't think it's a nifty new litter box. If your cat ingests any other plants please consult veterinarian immediately.
Also, remember that a cat is like a baby. They want to investigate everything. So, keep cleaning products and dangerous items where they can not get them.

LITTERBOX,GETTING YOUR CAT USED TO YOUR HOME AND OTHER PETS
Your kitten will be litter trained when you bring it home. I use "WORLDS BEST CAT LITTER". It is biodegradable and can be flushed down the toilet. Make sure when you bring your cat home you keep it in it's own room for the first 3 days. Have a comfy bed preferably with a blanket your breeder gave you,the litter box, food and water in there. I use a large bathroom since the cat doesn't like to eat next to it's litter box. Let it explore a little and and return it to the room. Unless you have other cats. If so you must keep them apart for the 72 hours. If you have other pets,PLEASE be careful. When I introduced my Yorkies to the first Sphynx, I let them sniff around the door where she was, then I put up a childproof gate so they could see each other. After a few days I let the cat roam free and kept the 3 little Yorkie devils on leashes. Anytime they tried to bark, or chase I said no and clapped my hands very loud. Now the Yorkies like to cuddle up with the cats. I often find the cats with their little legs wrapped around the dogs all fast asleep.

TOILET TRAINING
I have a couple of my cats toilet trained. It is easy if you have lots of time at home. If not I can do it for you. Or you can stick with the litter box. I make sure to clean my litter boxes every time someone goes. This will make sure there are no accidents. If you kitty does go somewhere else clean it with an enzyme cleaner. They will go in the same spot again otherwise. I haven't had this problem yet!! I read that covering the area with tinfoil will stop it immediately from happening again.
